Email is good.

A blog ostensibly about email productivity by Chris Coyier who you can email, obviously, at chris@coyier.com

Forgive the the trendy word. I just like it sometimes. I like how it doesn’t mean “actually mental illness” it just means “a little bit like that without being rude about it”.

Emails can be like this. Like omg what am I even looking at style. I get one that is about a community music jam that takes place at someone’s (quite remote) house.

  • The whole thing is in Comic Sans. It looks like they would have like 100% of it to be, but sometimes they copy and paste something in there and it goes Arial.
  • CAPS LOCK is used liberally, as one of many different ways to call attention to something. Except they also use underlining for the same purpose. And italics. And yellow marking. And larger sized text. And many!!!!!!!! exclamation points.
  • It makes a large note about who the email is from… in the body of the email right at the top.
  • It’s full of caveats about unusual situations like how they cannot send out advertisements through this email and you’re welcome to sleep on the floor and they’ll cook you breakfast in the morning.
  • It’s very, very long.

But you know what?

  • It tells you exactly what you need to know: when the next jam is.
  • It probably answers your questions.
  • It’s easy to unsubscribe from with a clear opt-out at the top, although you have to manually ask.
  • It’s welcoming to newcomers.
  • If you wanna know what the vibe of the jam is, you get it loud and clear in this email.
  • It’s been going for almost 25 years.

I’m kinda jealous really. It’s clearly effective. It’s got personality. It stands out. It doesn’t take a bunch of exotic technology to create and send.
