I prefer the latter, as it doesn’t force you to look at any one particular email all the time, you can default to the overview.

    FYI: Apple Mail actually can do both if you switch to the column layout and hide the preview pane.

      This. I like to be able to select an email (to run operations on it) without automatically viewing it. I can’t stand email preview panels that are always visible. Just my personal preference.

    Yahoo lets you view the selected email message under the list of messages so there is actually another configuration. Also Yahoo, unlike Google allows for continuous scrolling of the email message list. Google makes will only display 50 at a time before having to go to the next page of messages which is just inexcusable.
