I just talked about some good Justin Jackson advice on emailing, but here’s some more!
With cold emails or DMs, your main objective should be creating a connection (not asking for a sale). You might make a sale in the future, but that shouldn’t be the intention.

A genuine request for advice is a good way to create a connection.
So many cold emails go:
- Cheesy “icebreaker” garbage
- Immediate ask for something rather big, like a meeting
Instead the only way to create that connection is for there to be no doubt whatsoever that this is a hand-written email from an actual person with thoughts and feelings. Then, either don’t ask for anything or ask for something thoughtful and small (like advice).
You can also give something to them, which changes the dynamic a bit, but you ought to travel very lightly there. People be lookin’ a gift horse in the mouth.
